New School in Guatemala

Meet our new partner in Guatemala, Wilian Quiñónez!

We are excited to introduce you to Wilian Quiñónez, the Coordinator at Centro Educativo Cristiano Kairos. We asked him some questions about his family, ministry and the school he runs. We hope you are encouraged by his story.

Tell us more about yourself, your family and how you got into ministry.

I was born in Sololá, 140 km from Guatemala City. 21 years ago, I moved to Guatemala City to continue my theology studies. My wife Caren and I have been married for 21 years. We have 2 children, Fernando who is 17, and Sergio who is 13. Before getting married, my wife received from God the dream of taking His Word to the community through education. I love working in the Santa Catarina Pinula, and I share my wife’s dream of taking the Gospel to as many homes as possible. Helping the kids in my community access good education and learn the love of Jesus inspires us to work every day.

How and when did your school start?

The Christian school is a miracle from God. We opened our doors 23 years ago without a single penny. Only our faith in the Lord made the school possible. We did not have a single desk or a single pencil. We have always understood that love comes first, and resources come later.

What are the needs and challenges children and their families face?

Our community is made up of low-income families. Many parents have little schooling, which does not allow them to have good-paying jobs. Lack of education has caused many parents to abandon their families in the search for the “American Dream”. Another problem we face every day is gangs. Many of the parents are gang members. The gangs live mainly from drug sales and extortion. Businesses, big and small are extorted by gangs. For that reason, we see Kairos as a light in the darkness, as a center of hope where children can experience the love of Jesus.

How are CCI and the community impacting your community?

Gangs control the entire community, leaving the population in fear. We firmly believe that the love of Jesus will transform our community. This is the greatest contribution our school can make. Kairos school gives children access to safe and good education.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

We have many hopes and dreams. We long to reach more homes and serve more children. We want to share the Word of God with more families and provide more children with quality education. These hopes are limited due to the lack of adequate space and resources to support more children. If we are obedient to God, He will provide.

CCI is very excited to partner with Wilian and Kairos school, we hope to increase the impact on the children, families and the community.
